This book is aimed at the relative beginner who has mastered one or two simple jazz beats, and now wants to move into the field of drum fills.  The fills, although effective in their own right, have been chosen primarily for their rhythmic progression, taking the student methodically from the simplest of patterns in section one to much more adventurous ideas in section seven.  The book helps the student understand more about how fills should start and stop, as well as how long they should last, and it is hoped that, as a result, they will be able to invent their own favourite patterns in a more constructive and musical way.  The beats given before each fill are intended as a guide, and may be replaced by the student's own favourite if desired.  All fills should be practised at various dynamic levels - tempi are left to the discretion of the teacher / performer.
